*Redwood Modern Abstract Sculptures

Daryl Stokes has been creating redwood furniture, sculptures, and indoor/outdoor floor fountains beginning in 1977 on Monterey's famous Cannery Row and currently at his residential work shop. This exciting series of contemporary redwood floor sculptures, wall sculptures and sculptured glass top tables are his newest creations.





These modern redwood sculptures are a unique blend of boldly angled, geometric forms which interact with the contorted burl wood protrusions and appendages producing sharp contrasts. In some instances the sculpture designs appear to "morph" between hard angled flat surfaces into flowing irregular organic forms. The sculptures are most appreciated when the viewer can walk completely around them and discover the changing characteristics of each perspective. All of the sculptures are shown with three separate images in order to provide optimized viewing. These stunning abstract indoor/outdoor sculptures are composed with natural organic redwood burls and driftwood that have been individually carved with chain saws to further enhance the dynamic forms. Afterwords, the flat surfaces are planed and carefully sanded to reveal the spectacular grain patterns inherent in the redwood burls. Finally the sculptures are thoroughly finished with a high quality clear oil which brings out the rich colors and wood luster. The majority of the redwood burl used in these sculptures is derived from the underground stumps and root areas of ancient redwoods which have fallen victim to severe winter storm actions, landslides and forest fires. Many were washed down rivers and swept out to sea to eventually return to the beaches as scoured driftwood. The timeless beauty of these majestic giants live on in Stokes's artistic creations. All sculptures are signed and numbered by Daryl Stokes and include certificates of authenticity.

All of these incredible functional and sculptural designs are made predominately from underground redwood burl and driftwood pieces and are all one of a kind. Please Note: No living trees have been cut to create these works of art. The raw driftwood and burl pieces are carved with chain saws to enhance the natural forms. Afterwords the wood designs are further shaped and polished with grinders and sanders. Finally the sculpture components are carefully assembled with durable steel bars and treated with several applications of durable clear oil producing a matt finish.
